The stunning interplay of colour in Opals, known as "play-of-colour," is caused by its internal structure of silica spheres. These microscopic spheres diffract light as it passes through the stone, splitting it into various wavelengths, which appear as vibrant flashes of colour. This phenomenon is what gives opal its signature iridescence, known as opalescence.

Aboriginal Australian cultures, where most Opals are sourced, viewed them as sacred, believing they contained the spirit of the Earth.
